Road trips and shows

January 14th

15 cars gathered in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Osceola Parkway to make the Voyage to Mount Dora at 8:30AM, Linda & I with only a few hours of sleep. It was raining, more of  drizzle actually but wet. Chuck & Cindy in the open sided T-Bucket and Randy & Sharon in the '66 Ford Pickup went ahead to the Turkey Lake Plaza, it wasn't raining up there and we were going to pull through there and pick up a few others anyway. Just before 9:00 Bob & Marge, in their Chevelle, called and told us he got on the Turnpike rather than pulling into the parking lot and would meet us at Turkey Lake as well. "Malibu Mike" called from his Greenbrier to say he would catch up with us.

The first of our caravan would roll through the first toll plaza to the Turnpike right at 9:02. What a sight, a '69 Ranchero, a '64 Grand Prix, a '55 Chevy, a '50 Jeepster, a '95 Probe, a '65 Greenbrier, a '70 Corvette, a '62 Ranchero, a '63 Corvair Convertible, a '65 Mustang convertible, a '66 Mustang Convertible and our '61 Corvair Coupe lining up on the road headed towards our next hesitation at the Turkey Lake Plaza to pick up a '65 Corvair convertible, a T-Bucket. a '66 Ford pickup and the Orange Chevelle. Tony was in the lead Steve Mc was in the middle and Linda & I were bringing up the tail. Mike in his '64 Greenbrier was behind us as we ran slower for him to catch up which he did just before our turn on to 429. We all then made our way onto 441 for the final leg to the event. There were many more old cars and bikes on the road as we made our way through the towns of Plymouth and Zellwood making or way to Mount Dora and Renninger's Twin Markets where this Mt. Dora monthly show and swap meet takes place.

We arrived at 10:00 and made our way to the top of the hill. There were probably more than 150 cars and Motorcycles already displayed. Tony had already Pre-Registered all of us, we were directed to a spot that they had reserved for us. Don was already there in his '60 Metropolitan. John & Sandy would join us a little later in their Custom '56 Ford. This would make our total participation 19 cars.

There were many swap tables set up with lots of car goodies and other things in the trees on the hill. Several food and beverage stands, The Flea Market was on the other hill and the Antique Mall at the bottom of the hill we were on. Several went to see them both.

The Show staff brought our group a cooler of soda, Thank You!. Their DJ was very entertaining. I know that Bert & Ernie won a door prize. There were many prizes for the Bikes. Then we won the "Club Participation Award" that was given to Tom & Edna in their '65 Greenbrier and the $100 we will put in the SCTNC general Fund. Top 30 for the cars, one going to Chuck & Cindy's T-Bucket, along with "Best Of's" for GM, MOPAR and Ford. Best of Show was a tie between a '40 Buick and Gary & Wanda's '55 Chevy, "Remember When" the winners split the $100. It was a good show and a good time.

At 4:00 we all headed home, different routes were taken by the departing cars, some wanted to take other routes. Tony & Sharon, "Malibu Mike" and Linda & I headed out together. Even though the day started off with a Drizzle it sure turned out to be a nice one. So, one never knows, do they?

Thank You to the Staff for a great time at the "Mount Dora Car Show and Swap Meet".
