November 24th
What another beautiful day for our regular
Saturday outing. The "Turkey Run" was in full swing over in Daytona, Our
caravan was just us in our '61 Corvair Coupe for our weekly drive to Old
Town. John, KG4BFJ, would be meeting us there to spend the day in
"Town". T Rod, KI4GJS, was also going to come out and get me some
photos. Ted, KE4TTE, who started to Cruise on Friday's last night was
working, he was going to try and make it out. Mike, N4HHA, still wasn't
ready to bring out his latest Corvair, last week was a bear at his work
so he didn't get the time to work on it like he had planned. We got to
the Gate a little early, Gary greeted us with his usual smile, Bratt was
no where to be found. The Brick streets were decorated with great
Holiday regalia, Old Town really gets into the Spriit of the up coming
Season. Nikki & Dave were at the Cruise office to sign us in. Bob had
his GMC in the "Looney Bin". Cris & Larry were doing some adjustments on
the Mustang near "Flippers" but they would join him there. Bruce was out
in his Split Window 'Vette. Roger & Company were in their favorite spot
with Bill in Block 3. After we crossed Florida Plaza we backed in to the
first spot in the top of Block 4, we were the only one down there until
Manny crossed over the Plaza and parked his Camaro behind the General
Store. Bill & Doris stopped by for a chat. They remarked on how good of
a time Ted had last night.
About 2:30 we took a walk to see who was
in "Town". It was pretty quiet. We did find most of the "Redline
Rodders" in place. John was over at the "Turkey Run" as were several of
the "Regulars", even Shane was over there. Bob & Marge had their '41
Buick in place, Karen and the Kids were behind the stairs. Ralph &
Shirley were in their favorite "Viewing" area, Bill & Doris had joined
them by now. Emil, in his "High School Flame" the '48 Ford he is known
for was behind the "British Store". He is going in next week for surgery
and we won't see him on a Saturday for a few months, he promised to send
us an e-mail on how he is doing. Good Luck Emil, you will be in our
thoughts. Gary & Helene were in their Mustang at the top of Block 1.
Most of the "Die Hards" we in place. Many regulars were also out of town
for the Holiday. Bert & Ernie were back from their trip. We headed back
to the car for a while.
At just 8 minutes before four, Mike,
N4HHA, called on the radio said he was hungry and on his way out to meet
up with us. So off we headed to "Flippers". We arrived ahead of the rush
and got our table on the Patio. Jane, who had the week off, was in today
on her Birthday. We wished her a Happy Birthday and Thanked her for
being there for us. She got to go home at 5:00. Mark, in his T-Bucket
and Nick & Fran in the '32 5 window coupe rumbled down the bricks as
Mike was walking over from spectator parking. We pulled a table next to
us so they could join us. They had spent the morning at the "Turkey
Run". While eating, the Dinner Crowd started to show up. Pep & Nancy
were also at a table outside. It is always great to visit with our
friends over a meal. More cars had made their way into "Town" while we
visited at dinner.
On the way back down to the cars, the top
3 blocks were filling up by now. Even block 4 's car population was
expanding. Bob & Marje backed their '68 SS396 Chevelle into a spot
across from us. The night was set for Friends, Old ones and ones we were
about to make. Rodger was out in his Citroen. Jack & Betty were just
down from us in the '37 Ford. Next to Dale & Sandie's Model T Tudor "Pro
Street". Harriet & Joe were spotted in the T-Bird. Doug & Trish had the
'64 GTO in front of the Old Shed across from the Maintenance office. Tom
& Chris were out in the the Yellow 'Vette. Dave came down to tell us
of the 1922 Fire Truck that was set up by the clock all trimmed out for
the Holiday Season. The rest of the night passed
by quickly, Jim came out and sang on the corner by himself tonight. So I
guess it was the "Duke".
Mesha & Shawn stopped by with the "Flag Winners"
just after 8:20. The "General Lee" followed by a Hazzard county
Sherriff's car, Daisy Duke's Mopar and a Caddy fit for the "Boss", would be led to Block 4, that becomes the staging area at this
time, by Nikki, Lee, Dave and Gary.
Followed by the rest of the
cars from the top 3 blocks. Chris who had been playing a mix of Nostalgic
music and radio spots, got word that we were ready to Cruise, he then
gave the safety announcements, played "The Duke's" rendition of the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise", right on time, for this the
909th running of this tradition. Lee escorted the "General
Lee" followed by the rest of the
210 cars, rolling up the bricks of "Deac Hundley Avenue",
delighting a very large crowd of spectators. "Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from
the sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "A&W", "Tags With Class", "Wound and Around", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers,
Race Depot & "Flippers" just to
name a few. Thank you to, Allan, Lee, Gary, Miguel, Nikki and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making this our 261st consecutive Saturday a fun and
safe one. Mike Singer, Get Well! We all miss you.
