August 25th

It was that time on a Saturday, 4 of our regulars would start to head out to Old Town, Steve Mc would be coming from the furthest out in his '41 Willys pickup., Mike & Kristen approached from the North in their '64 Corvair convertible, Tony in "Lucy" met us at the "Top of the Hill" and we coordinated, over the radio so that we all would pass through the toll plaza close to each other. The four of us arrived in a row at the "Gate", Lee was there with a smile and a copy of Mike Kelly's for us. Bratt was at her Registration area with her usual Welcome, Gary C. was assisting her. We rounded the corner by the clock "Big John's" GT350 was spotted, Bob had his GMC pickup in  the "Looney Bin". Roger and Sue, in the lucky 'Vette" were in place next to Bill in his '47 Plymouth. Tony parked "Lucy" in her place of honor for the last time. Tony would bring his chair down and join us under our overhang behind "Black Market Minerals".

We all contemplated the weather for the next few hours as we visited with Bill & Doris and all that stopped by. The cars were coming in at rather a slow pace. The Weatherman promised a 60% chance of rain but that still meant the the would be a 40% chance of no rain. A few even made small wages on when it might precipitate. At 3:30 when Linda & I headed to the top three blocks to deliver the newsletters we decided to roll up the windows, just in case. It was Hot and Sunny while we made our way up visiting with the Cruisers that were parked on "Trophy Row". Louie had his Nova wagon at the top of Block 3, Dave had his Black Mustang convertible under the carport. Several of the "Red Line Rodders" were in place by John, who had out his black and silver Nova wagon. Karen and the kids were in their favorite place while Ben performed his parking duties. I spotted Darrell's '66 Ford. Ken had his SS Camaro in place, Mike & Mark weren't out yet. While we were at the "Top" we just made our way over to "Flippers", we had told the others to meet us there at 4:00. The Patio was crowded, turned out it was a large group of small children waiting for a "Take Out" order. Jane would have them move from the prime spots and we then would be able to take our favorite place outside. "Big John" and a few others were already inside. Tony, Mike & Kristen would arrive on time and Jane took great care of us once again. Gary & Wanda made their way down the bricks in their '55 Chevy while we dinned. Several other cars would also make their way in to "Town". Tony would be taking a Pizza back with him, Steve MC stayed back and relaxed.

As we made our way back down to Block 4 we visited with Emil who was setting behind his "Fat Fendered Ford", Shane had his '57 Chevy parked next to him. Charlie, a friend to the Cruise was also there. We spent a bit of time chatting, Mike & Mark were parked across from Ken so another small delay, then we worked our way down to Block 2. Bert & "Ernie" were setting in the "Looney Bin", Cris & Larry were there with yet another Mustang. The timing was great, I found Chris making his way up to the "Blue Room", for his shift at Old Town Radio. I had a "Special Birthday Wish" for the Cruiser of the Month, Tony. The Wisconsin Grandkids e-mailed me to take a message to be read. We heard on the way from several Cruisers that Bob & Marge M were making their way back from New Jersey, a bit of trailer problems was making this journey a bit arduous, they should be back on the "Brick Streets" of Old Town next week.

Just after we arrived back at the cars, Mark in his T-Bucket would make his way around Florida Plaza, around to the Gate and back down to park in Block 4. "Bo" in his '64 Corvair and Bob in the '36 Ford Humpback would park across from us. Bob in his '68 Chevelle and Nick in the '32 5 Window coupe would join us in Block 4. It looked like the rain was going to move in, reports over the radio and telephone had come in, It was raining heavily to the East, West North and South of us. Mike was watching the radar on the notebook. Mark would take his T-Bucket to the trailer. "Cruisers" started leaving "Town". We just got our umbrellas and I got my rain coat out. The rest of the night was spent as it usually is, talking cars and some of us radios and computers.

Let's just say the weatherman was right I guess Old Town slipped into the 60%, the rain came just before Cruise time. A light rain that really didn't dampen the sprits of the "Die Hards".

Nikki  stopped by with the "Flag Winners" just after 8:20. The "Cruiser of the Month", Tony at the wheel of "Lucy" the '69 Ranchero would be led to Block 4, that becomes the staging area at this time, by Bratt, Lee & Dave. Followed by the rest of the cars from the top 3 blocks. Chris, filling in for Mike Singer, that had been playing the usual mix of nostalgic music and jingles, got word that we were ready to Cruise, he then gave the safety announcements, played Kelly Leonard's "Live Version", recorded at Old Town a while back, version of the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the Saturday Nite Cruise", right on time, for this the 896th running of this tradition. Osceola's finest would escort Tony followed by the rest of the 127 cars, rolling up the bricks of "Deac Hundley Avenue", delighting the soggy crowd of spectators, "Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from the sidewalks and boulevards.

Tonight we would come back for "Part 2", Steve Mc won a Flag and needed to come back for the closing festivities to pick up the prizes associated with it. Joe filled in for the absent, ailing and still drying out Allan and gave out the awards for the Flags. It was raining lightly as the drawings were made, Joe hurried it up a bit so that we all might get out of the WET.

Thank you Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline", the "A&W", "Tags With Class", "Wound and Around", & "Flippers" just to name a few. Thank you to Joe, Gary, Lee, Bratt, Dave, Ron, Nikki, Miguel, Tommy along with the entire Cruise Staff and our fellow Cruisers for making this our 248th consecutive Saturday a fun and safe one. Mike Singer, we miss you, get well soon.
