June 9th
What a beautiful day, heading for a Hot
Summer night at Old Town, NASA managed to get a picture perfect launch
of Atlantis on the STS117 mission, on time last night. Dennis wasn't
needed as a backup, so he and Cindy would be on their way over in the
'63 Corvette Grand Sport from the "Space Coast". Steve Mc would meet us
at the top of the "Hill" for our weekly pilgrimage in his '41 Willys
pickup for the first time. Tony & Sharon said they would be a little
later than normal, Mike & Kristen met us just about 1:20 so off we
headed on to the Parkway.
Gary was at the gate, Ron was to come in a
little later. Bratt was at her post at registration. We made our turn at
the clock to head towards "Trophy Row" about 1:50. "Big John's" GT 350
was on the corner but the streets looked a little bare. It was pretty
hot by now and the weatherman said not to really count on the 10% rain
chance to give us any real precipitation. Kathy dropped the gate at
Florida Plaza for us to make it to our favorite parking area behind
"Black Market Minerals" in block 4. Tony & Sharon only ended up being a
few minutes behind us. So there we were, back in place for another
Saturday in "Town". One might think that coming out every Saturday night
might end up being a drag, well it isn't. Linda & I enjoy all of the
people that come out. "Cruiser" friends and all of the spectator friends
we have yet to make. Especially those that we see every time when they
come back to Florida on vacation. I still haven't heard anything from
Ted. Hope he is O.K. Larry, WA3PGL, and Linda, KA3PRB, friends of the
Cruise came out to join us at "Flippers" for dinner. We all stayed by
the cars for while, then headed to dinner a few minutes early to drop
off the newsletters. Not too many regulars were in place by the time we
headed up, the "Orange Blossom Chapter of the AACA" would line the
bricks on the East side of Deac Hundley Avenue. The "Antique Car Club of
the Bahia Shrine" were to have several cars North of the Stage. Emil had
his "Fat Fendered Ford" near the British store where he likes to be.
Shane was nearby in his '57 Chevy. Those 2 great Corvettes that barely
escaped the salvage yard, then beautifully restored, were at the "Top"
right next to the RS Camaro.
We then took our usual place outside at
"Flippers", of course Jane was our server, she always takes great care
of our varying sized groups. We took our time and visited with all and
watched many cars roll onto the bricks. The now much quieter, T-Rex"
made it's way in. Mark in his new T-Bucket wasn't far behind. After
leaving "Flippers" we started to head back. Now many of the AACA cars
were coming in. Including that '55 Chrysler, the MVP award that Enos
Slaughter was given by the Yankee's after the World Series. On the way
back down to the cars we all visited with others and I learned that Mike
Singer would be out and Allan would be at the controls of "Old Town
Radio".
Once we were back at the cars, Bob & "Bo"
joined us in block 4, Terry, out as a spectator, stopped by with a "John
Deere" lunch box for Tony. A spectator, Dave, KC2BFL, who just relocated
to Florida, stopped after he saw the antennas on our car, mentioned that
they would become regulars after seeing what was in "Town" tonight. Doc
was also out in the "Tater Truck", Jaime & Aglae had visitors with them
from Puerto Rico, the youngest, Luis rode out in the Cobra. Louie in his
'52 Ford and his cousin John in his Caddy were parked just down from us.
Tonight I stayed near the cars instead of my usual lapping the town and
visited with many that stopped by. Carolos, KC4SJL. was visiting from
Miami and stopped by. About the time that Linda & I made our regular run
to the General Store, Graham, G4HFG, from Manchester, England, called in
over the Radio to check on the details of tonight's event.
It was just after 8:00 when I went and
snapped a photo of "The
Dukes" on their new corner, doo ing what they doo best. Angel even
joined them for a tune or two. Then it was time, Nikki stopped by with
the "Flag Winners" and the "Cruiser of the Month", Tony & Donna Fisher
in their '68 Mustang were being led to block 4, that becomes the staging
area at this time, by Lee & Bratt. The 2 visiting clubs would follow
closely behind him. Once they were set at "Kids Town", Allan. who had
been taking requests and playing his mix of music from what he likes to
call the "Blue Room" gave the safety announcements, played a special
rendition of a "recorded live at Old Town" version of the National
Anthem. Right on time the cars hit the bricks of "Deac Hundley Avenue",
delighting the large crowd of spectators. There would be a total of 209
cars rolling by them on this Hot Summer Night.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display
of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you
to Rich, Joe, Ron, Lee, Nikki, Micha and the entire Cruise Staff for
keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for making this
our 237th consecutive Saturday a fun and Safe one.
Great Job Allan!
11:30PM, Heard from Ted, he's OK!
On to the Flag Winners...
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
