May 5th
Today we had several of our "Regulars"
head out to a "Open Show" in Brooksville. So it was just Mike & Kristen,
in the '64 Corvair convertible, that would be going out with us today.
Hopefully some of the others that went to Brooksville would join in
later. Anyway we both had a few errands to do before heading out so we
met at the CVS on John Young and Vine street to make our way out.
It is always fun to head out the "Tourist Corridor " of 192 to Old Town,
it's like the show starts early. Watching the heads turn to look at our
cars.
We arrived at 1:40, Ron H was at the gate
with his usual smile. We then made our way down the bricks to
"Registration". Bratt was back! She checked us in and we made the turn
by the clock to make our way to the "Cruiser of the Month" garage, Linda
& I were chosen as the May, "Cruiser of the Month". We found a spot next
to the garage for Mike & Kristen to be nearby. Next week most of our
"Regulars" will be back and they will go down to Block 4 where we
usually park. The day started off very slow, the weatherman said that
there was a 30% chance of rain. This always keeps a lot of cars away.
There were also several other events going on in Central Florida. Roger
& Sue had the "Lucky 'Vette" out. Bill was in his '55 Chevy. Several of
the Red Line Rodders were in their usual spot up by Bob & Marge in the
'41 Buick. Emil had his "Fat Fendered Ford" where he likes it. The "Rod
Squad" with the 2 vintage 'Vettes and the Camaro were in place. Darrell
had his '67 Ford just where he likes it. Russ & Phyllis were next to
Bob. Mark, the "T-Rex" pilot had arrived in "Town" before we did. He
stopped by for a visit. I found Tony & Marianne setting with the bunch
by the stairs across from the stage. Bert & "Ernie" were out as
spectators. He was still a little sore from the crash yesterday.
Dennis, Mike's dad stopped by for a visit. It was strange not being in
our spot behind "Black Hills" minerals but then the honor that was
bestowed upon us was great. We'll be back down there in June. Kristen
was hijacked by her Mother and Grandmother before we would go to lunch.
Tony called as he was leaving the show in Brooksville to remind us it
was 15 Minutes to FOOD and they were on their way to Old Town. Ted,
KE4TTE, called on the radio to mention he would join us for lunch. Good
news from the open show at Brooksville, Tony & Sharon in "Lucy", Steve
Mc in his "Grinster". Neil & Elaine in the Austin Healy, Ed & Evelyn in
the '63 Corvair convertible and Gary & Wanda, in "Remember When", their
'55 Chevy all went home with trophies. Congratulations!
We headed out for "Flippers", visited with
more "cruisers" that came in and on such a nice day decided to dine
alfresco. Jane, our official server, had a few more minutes today to
chat a bit while taking care of us. Ted did make it for lunch. While we
leisurely ate our meals and visited with Ted, he had been on vacation
the last 10 days or so. Flippers then started to get the rest of the
"Early Crowd". Ted started to field the calls over the Amateur radio
from the other "Regulars" from the UK, that Cruise with us over the
airwaves, Graham, G4HFG, Collin, 2E0RIG and a few others that like to
hear about the cars.
On the way back down to the cars I stopped
in to visit with Mike Singer for a few minutes. Linda stayed downstairs
and visited with the Regulars. Mike and Linda stayed by our cars and Ted
& I went to visit the "Beer Lady" in block 4. Roger & Larry were holding
down our regular spots for us. Tony called on the Radio and they had
arrived in "Lucy" with the latest trophy in hand and parked next to
Mike. Just about 6:30 Richard arranged for a "Free Rinse" for all of us
Cruisers. See, it never rains at Old Town. Gregg and Ken stopped by for
a visit. "The
Dukes" were doo ing what they doo so well on the corner. Then the
"British invasion" encroached. Ian, G4ZPZ, Sue, 2E1SUE, his wife,
Alan, M3ELP and Mark, M3GZJ from the UK as well as Wayne, VE3CEZ, and
his wife, from Brooksville, stopped to
visit. Things got a little hectic about then, Being "Leader of the Pack"
as Ian called it, we had to be ready about 20 minutes earlier than
normal. Nikki got the "Flag Winners" list to us just about the time that
Bratt was ready to lead us to "Kids Town" for the beginning of the
parade followed by the cars from the top 3 blocks.
Mike Singer, who had been playing his
great mix of nostalgic music all evening gave the safety announcements
the National Anthem was then played. "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise". Bratt assisted by Nikki had us start it off at
"Kids Town", followed by the rest of the 169 Cruisers onto the bricks of
"Deac Hundley Avenue" for this the 880th running of this Central Florida
tradition to a crowd of cheering spectators.
Thank you Mike Singer for playing the
"Corvair Song" after announcing that Linda an I were the May "Cruiser of
the Month", to Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display
of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you
to Rich, Joe, Ron, Dave, Nikki and the entire Cruise Staff for
keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for making this
our 232nd consecutive Saturday a Fun and Safe one.
On to the Flag Winners!
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
