May 26th

It was a beautiful day. Our last day as "Cruiser of the Month". We had 4 cars meet on the "Hill" 2 Yellow and 2 White, 3 of them Corvairs, the other was a rare '53 Ford Courier. With 6 HAM radio operators to boot. N4HHA, Mike, K4SLB, yours truly, K4EIO, Linda, K4AVD, Tony, WB4ACE, Sharon and K4SKM, Steve. We looked like a rolling daisy. The Love Bugs love yellow, it was nice to have 2 yellow cars ahead of us, no dead bugs to scrape off when we parked.

We arrived at our regular time, Ron was at the Gate as usual, Bratt was just down the street a bit, at the Registration Area. Gary was there helping out with the mirror hangers. With this being a Holiday weekend most of us thought it might be a Cruise where we would have more spectators than cars. Steve, Mike and Tony headed down to block 4, and parked behind "Black Market Minerals" our favorite spot. Linda & I parked our little Corvair in it's place of honor for the last time. We then took our chairs to join them. Unknown to Kristen, Mike's daughter, on this her 18th birthday, Sharon had baked a cake and Mike had brought balloons. Annette, who would be joining us later, was bringing her out, Simone, a friend of Kristen was also going to meet up with us. After Linda an I delivered some newsletters, stopping by all of the regulars that were in place along "Trophy Row", even Nicky "Bop" was out still "Looking for an Echo". Joe and Kay in the Camaro brought "Mustang Mike" and a friend from Missouri tonight. Most of the "Red Line Rodders" were in place. Bob & Marge were in the '41 Buick and Ralph & Shirley were under their favorite stairs, they didn't have the popcorn yet. There were still many empty spots along the way.  We then made our way back down to the cars, the plan was made to have the cake after dinner. Linda and Sharon went to check with Jane if this would be OK.

Jeff rolled his Edsel in. Dan & Liz were with him. Roberta had the "Beer Tent" all stocked up. Linda & I had a very nice surprise, Leigh Anne & Brent, daughter and son-in-law along with Gabryel, grandson, joined us. Then 4:00 rolled around and we all started to "Flippers", Ted, KE4TTE, arrived in time to have dinner with us. It was quite a gang of people, at least we gave Jane a heads up. Graham, G4HFG, & Carole called from the Airport while waiting for the boarding call, yes they were in their way back to the UK, to wish Kristen a Happy Birthday and bid their farewell for this trip. About the time our food arrived, Shannon, daughter, Ken, son-in-law, Marcus, grandson and Alexis, granddaughter popped around the corner. They had already eaten but they joined in on the birthday celebration and had some of the cake. I offered cake up to other diners on the patio with us, a very nice couple with 2 young girls took us up on it. Jane handled our very large group with great efficiency, as usual. Thank you! Yes, we let her have some cake too. After all this is all family out here. While dining we spotted "T-Rex" followed by it's old owner, Mark, he was in his new T-Bucket. It was much quieter. Thank You, Laura. It was time to make it back down to the cars, we all sort of left at different times, Marcus headed out with me to make sure I got Mike Singer his newsletter. By now "Trophy Row" was starting to fill up quickly. Joe & Harriet, who hadn't been out in a while in the Rose colored T-Bird even had the chance to park by our bunch in block 4. "Bo" and Ron in the Corvair convertible and the '36 Ford humpback were parked just down from us. Dirt had "Captain Crunch", his '61 Ranchero, Superman to our Clark Kent '60 Ranchero, with it's new supercharger on it, good to see him out.

The "Birthday Girl" her mom and friend spent much of the evening off enjoying the many shops and rides that Old Town has to offer. Our grandkids spent a lot of time just hanging out with us and visiting with Cruisers and spectators. Marcus would help me get the newsletters to the rest that request them. Bob B & Marge arrived in the Chevelle with Nick & Fran's grandkids. Nick & Fran came out later. He is still working on getting his Deuce coupe back on the road. Rumor has it that there is a trade in the works between Steve Mc and Dan Z. Those 2 are always keeping things interesting.

Just way too much going on tonight to give it the space it deserves but I am running out of space. Come on out to Old Town and see just what goes on. The band on the stage, "The Dukes" on the corner. the rides the stores the people oh and yes, the Cars! This is truly a place for the whole family!

Nikki got the "Flag Winners" list to us just after 8:15.  Bratt & Lee led us to "Kids Town" for the beginning of the parade followed by the cars from the top 3 blocks. Mike Singer, who had been playing his great mix of nostalgic music all evening gave the safety announcements the National Anthem was then played. "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed "It's the Saturday Nite Cruise". Bratt assisted by Lee & Greg had us start it off at "Kids Town", followed by the rest of the 208 Cruisers onto the bricks of "Deac Hundley Avenue" for this the 883rd running of this Central Florida tradition to a crowd of cheering spectators.

This, our last night to be the "Leader of the Pack" as May "Cruiser of the Month". It sure was an honor, even Ian, G3ZPZ, and a few other HAM operators from England were talking to us over the radio while we were lining up. Wishing us the best of luck. Our 3 grandchildren that were out tonight were in the back seat waving vigorously to the crowd. It was very special to have them with us tonight.

Thank you Mike Singer for playing the "Corvair Song", to Old Town for letting us, the curators of this display of  "Rolling  Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you to Rich, Rod, Gary, Lee, Ron, Dave,  Ben, Micha and the entire Cruise Staff for keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for making this our 235th consecutive Saturday a Fun and Safe one.

Tonight we did come back for part 2 and even won the "Tags With Class" license plate frame.
