May 19th
Today our little caravan was smaller than
normal, a few "Regulars" out of town and Mike was still in the middle of
installing his new top on the Corvair convertible. So it was Tony &
Sharon in "Sunny", their bright yellow Corvair that would lead us to Old
Town today. The "Love Bugs" like yellow more than white, it was fun
trailing this swarm that his car was in. We arrived at the gate at our
normal time, Ron was there as usual. As we rolled down the street to
where Bratt would check us in, Gary, Lee and Rich were there as well.
Joe was off today so Lee would be filling in for him. As we made our
turn onto "Trophy Row" we noticed that it wasn't very populated. I guess
it was the over cast skies and the wind that was blowing. The weatherman
promised that it would be a beautiful day but windy. Tony & Sharon went
to our "Regular Spot" behind "Black Market Minerals", we parked in our
VIP spot by the Cruiser of the Week garage. Linda and I gathered up our
chairs and headed to join them, we had to wait a good 10 minutes to
cross Florida Plaza as hundreds of motorcycles rolled past us, most not
even stopping for the stop sign I might add. They were in "Town" for an
awards ceremony for a Charity Run set up by "Sun on the Beach" in
association with the Sheriffs department. They would be parked in the
spectator lot until about 5:00. Linda and I made our first outing to
deliver the newsletters, Roger and Bill were at the bottom of block 3.
Bruce had his split window near the "Shop" in his favorite place. It was
strange not to see Gary & Kathy's Fairlane in it's place, she was at a
wedding and the car was set for the "Beach Blast" tomorrow. Many other
regulars have actually been over there since last night. "Big John" and
Tammy were out in the GT350, Bob in his GMC then Mike in the '65 GTO.
The "Double Nickel" was in it's spot, in the "Red Line Rodders" line up,
Bob & Marge had the '41 Buick next to it. We headed back to block 4,
George and Mary were out on their "Trike", they should have the Monte
Carlo back on the road soon. It will be nice to have them Cruising
again. Mark was spotted in his new "T-Bucket", I might add, it is a lot
quieter than the "T-Tex" he used to pilot. "This one's a lot meaner" he
said, "Real Power in this thing".
We headed out for "Flippers", visited with
more "cruisers" that came in. It was such a nice day, we decided to dine
alfresco. Jane, our official server, had a few more minutes today to
chat a bit while taking care of us. Mike, Annette and Kristen along with
Graham & Carole were meeting us for dinner. Ted was delayed and would
join us on "Trophy Row" a little later. The arrival times were a bit
scattered but then again we wanted to visit a bit before heading back
down to the cars anyway. Jane did a great job, as usual. Mike & Annette
were leaving Kristen with our group and headed back home to try and get
the top done and try to get back out to "Cruise". I stopped in to visit
with Mike Singer for a few minutes. Linda stayed downstairs and visited
with the Regulars. Graham and Ted headed for the "Beer Lady", a new one
I might add, Roberta, Welcome! Carole & Linda wandered down to the end
of the block, the rest of us scattered about for a bit, visiting with
all that stopped by. Larry, in his Ford and Roger in his Chevy parked
across from us. Louie, in the '52 Ford actually got to park in our line
up. It was a slow but steady stream of cars that would enter the rest of
the night. "The
Dukes" were doo ing what they doo so well on the corner. During one
of their breaks, the fans had a Birthday Cake for Craig, Happy
Birthday!!
Micha got the "Flag Winners" list to
us just after 8:15. We were being delayed a bit, the last car in tonight
had some mechanical problems on the way down "Trophy Row", blocking the
top 2 blocks from getting into line. Rich had to lead to block 4 along
with Lee. Bratt then took over, she had brought some of the cars around
to Florida Plaza to circumvent the road block. Bratt then led us to
"Kids Town" for the beginning of the parade followed by the cars from
the top 3 blocks. Mike Singer, who had been playing his great mix of
nostalgic music all evening gave the safety announcements the National
Anthem was then played. "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed "It's the Saturday
Nite Cruise". Bratt assisted by Greg had us start it off at "Kids Town",
followed by the Azalea City Cruisers, today's visiting car club, then
the rest of the 210 Cruisers onto the bricks of "Deac Hundley Avenue"
for this the 882nd running of this Central Florida tradition to a crowd
of cheering spectators.
Thank you Mike Singer for playing the "Corvair Song", it was hard not to
"Bop"! After announcing that Linda and I were the May "Cruiser of the
Month", to Old Town for letting us, the curators of this display of
"Rolling Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you
to Rich, Gary, Lee, Ron, Dave, Miguel, Ben, Micha and the entire Cruise
Staff for keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for
making this our 234th consecutive Saturday a Fun and Safe one.
The wind did diminish, no rain fell anywhere near us, what a beautiful
night. Tomorrow morning a bunch from FACACA are headed to Cypress
Gardens for an "In Park" show.
On to the Flag Winners!
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
