May 12th
We headed out to Old Town at 1:20 or so,
it was like we were following the Sun but we were headed West. I figured
it must have been the route we were taking, that it seemed so bright
out. Several of the Cruisers that we usually caravan with were busy for
the Mothers Day Weekend. I was talking with Tony on the Radio but both
Linda and I were having a hard time locating their car. They should have
been right in front of us. It was bad enough with the reflections from
our highly polished white Corvair, thanks to Bob, that extremely bright
glow was just glaring in front of us. It wasn't until we came to a stop
light and a big truck blocked the Sun a bit, it was Tony & Sharon in
that bright glow! The first outing for the Yellow Corvair to Old Town.
Even Ron at the gate didn't recognize that it was Tony at the wheel of
this brightly polished beauty. Bratt signed us in, and we made the turn
by the clock and something was missing. Where "Mike Kelly's Cruise News"
booth used to be was a brick walk way to the new Multi level Go-Kart
Track at the "Fun Spot" park. Oh, there it was, next to the Carport for
the Cruise Director, then the next 4 spots had the Maintenance carts,
then the Cruiser of the Month VIP Parking. An interesting change. The
track was now open to the public. Tony & Sharon continued down to block
4, behind "Black Market Minerals" where the "Florida Antique and Classic
Automobile Cruisers Association" regularly parks. We took our chairs
down to join them. It wasn't long before Ed & Evelyn parked next to them
in their '63 Corvair convertible. We all sat there a while squinting and
chatting with other Cruisers and spectators that were stopping by. Gary
& Wanda then arrived and parked "Remember When", their '55 Chevy.
Unknown to Tony & Sharon, Gary & Wanda had brought us some extra "Solar
Radiation Protection" so that we could receive some relief.
VERY BIG SUNGLASSES, they sure helped. (Sorry Tony & Sharon, I
couldn't help it.) Actually the car looks great, glad to see it come out
to Old Town.
Tony & Sharon accompanied us to "Flippers"
for our meal just before 4:00. we chatted with all of the 'Regulars" on
the way up. Jane, took great care of us as usual. Graham, who is usually
on my shoulder, from the UK, actually arrived in Central Florida for a
visit. He should be joining us next week at "Flippers" along with a few
other Ham Radio operators, Cruisers and Regular Spectators. Neil &
Elaine Cruised the "Bricks" for the last time until next October. Back
to the UK for them. We'll miss them and their great cars.
We had to be ready to Cruise about 20 minutes earlier than
normal. Mark, who delivered "T-Rex" to Tara today stopped by just before
Cruise time, he finally caught up with Nick & Fran. Nikki got the "Flag Winners" list to us just about the time that
Bratt & Lee were ready to lead us to "Kids Town" for the beginning of the
parade followed by the cars from the top 3 blocks.
Mike Singer, who had been playing his
great mix of nostalgic music all evening gave the safety announcements
the National Anthem was then played. "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise". Bratt & Lee had us start the Cruise off at
"Kids Town", followed by the rest of the 192 Cruisers onto the bricks of
"Deac Hundley Avenue" for this the 881st running of this Central Florida
tradition to a crowd of cheering spectators.
It is such a great honor and privilege to
be the "Leader" of this fantastic weekly event, even just for a month.
To be the first car on the bricks is just so, overwhelming. The response
of the crowd when the cars start rolling up the even side of the street,
these people are remembering the cars that we drive from a "Simpler
Time" or they are spotting a car that they have only heard about or
always wanted to build. The memories are as varied as the cars that
parade each and every week. We are fortunate to arrive early and chat
with many of the spectators during the "Showing" along "Trophy Row" for
many hours through out the day. I just can't say enough about it.
Cruisers it can't hurt if you come early and often if you would like to
be "Cruiser of the Month". It's more than a tradition, it's like an
"Institution", that will be celebrating its 17th Anniversary on June
2nd. We'll be here for that too.
Thank you, again Mike Singer for playing the
"Corvair Song" after announcing that Linda an I were the May "Cruiser of
the Month", to Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display
of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you
to Gary, Kathy, Miguel, Ben, Greg and the entire Cruise Staff for
keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for making this
our 233rd consecutive Saturday a Fun and Safe one.
On to the Flag Winners!
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
