April 7th
What a beautiful Easter Weekend, a little
cool for Central Florida but bright and Sunny!. 2 Corvairs and "Lucy"
the '69 Ranchero headed for Old Town from the Top of the Hill. Linda & I
were in our '61 Coupe and Mike was in his '64 Convertible. The rest of
our regular caravan were otherwise engaged. Rich, the Saturday Cruise
Director would be back at his post tonight. Nothing special in "Town"
just the regular Cruise. Many of our "Snowbirds" will be trekking
towards home this weekend so tonight may be a smaller event.
As we made our turn towards the gate from
the frontage road, we spotted John, KG4BFJ, standing next to Ron who
always greets us with that welcoming smile of his. John boarded Mike's
convertible and rode with us to block 4, our favorite spot behind "Black
Hills Minerals". We would be the
first occupants of that area. On our way down "Trophy Row", I noticed
that a lot of the "Regulars" were not in their spots in Block 3. A few
cars that I hadn't seen in a while were in them. I did spot John Foster
in a yet another car I didn't know was his, a Red 49 Ford. Roger wasn't
out nor were John & Angel. Ron had his vintage Chevy pick up close to
his favorite spot. Gary and Kathy had their Fairlane in its normal
place. Bruce had his 'Vette right by the "Shop" as he liked it. We chose
to hang out in Block 4 and chat with John, Mark, who had arrived even
earlier than we did in the "T-Rex", stopped down to see us for a while
as did Bill & Doris. We started for our dinner a little early seeing as
we had not gone out for our newsletter deliveries. We would take a slow
walk up and drop them off on the way. By now a few more cars had
arrived, Cris & Larry had their Mustang in the "Looney Bin" across from
them was some of the "Drop your Top" gang, AKA Brevard County's Vintage
Vehicle Club. Most of the "Red Line Rodders" along with Bob & Marge were
in their spots at the top of block 2. Emil in his Fat Fender Ford, Gary
& Helena in their Mustang weren't to far away from "T-Rex" in Block 1.
We arrived at "Flippers" a little early,
Ted, KE4TTE, was running a little late. The 6 of us ordered, John joined
us tonight. Jane took great care of us as usual, Nick had a gravity
check with a pepper shaker. Other than that, once again a great meal. We
headed back to the cars just a little before 5:00, John stayed with Ted
until he was finished eating. We dropped off a few more newsletters and
I stopped by to see Mike Singer up in "Old Town Radio", we agreed that
Deac would have loved the cover on this weeks issue. A "Big Band" was
set up on stage, it was the "Central Florida Youth Big Band" they would
be there until "Reunion" would come to the stage at 7:00. Clint & Lynn
had arrived by now and had the yellow '48 Ford pickup parked by the
"Valvoline Garage". John B was out in his "Slick 51" Chevy Pickup. Louie
was spotted in Block 3 in his '64 Nova wagon. Block 4 had started to
fill up by the time we got back down to it. Ann had the "Beer Truck"
parked under the tent that was still up from last weeks event. Jim &
Craig, "The Dukes"
were set up a little early on their new corner, singing that familiar
Doo Wopp they Dooo so well.
We spent the rest of the evening chatting
with, what had become a very large crowd of spectators and the rest of
our "Family" that the cruisers have become to us. This is mine and
Linda's 228th consecutive Saturday night, so we have become almost part
of the background. It is amazing that even coming out this many times
that it never gets old. Rodger was spotted coming in late, tonight in
one of his "Healy's. The day passed quickly and here came Nikki with the
"Flag Winners" list. Much to the delight of Tony & Sharon, they were
right on the top of the list. Tonight we would all come back and cheer
them on when they received their prizes.
Rich and Lee led Clint & Lynn Olson in
their '48 Ford pickup. April's "Cruiser of the Month" to block 4 right
at 8:15. The cars from the top 3 blocks would follow to the staging area
that Block 4 becomes at this time.
Mike Singer, who had been playing his
great mix of nostalgic music, gave the safety announcements, played the
National Anthem, right on time. "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise". Lee led the '48 Ford from the turn at "Kids
Town", followed by the rest of the 210 Cruisers onto the bricks of "Deac
Hundley Blvd." for this the 876th running of this Central Florida
tradition to a near capacity crowd of cheering spectators.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you
to the Old Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event,
Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you to Rich, Joe, Ron,
Lee, Nikki, Bratt and the entire Cruise
Staff for keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for
another fun and safe day in "Town".
Tonight we would come back for "Part 2" the drawings and
awards presentations, normally we would head right home so that this
report would be available before 11:00. With Tony & Sharon winning a
Flag, we came back. One of the most interesting things, was a couple
from Norway. When she asked him where he would like to go for his
birthday, he said, "Old Town, in Florida to go to the Saturday Nite
Cruise!". This is truly an international event. We have more than 79
countries access the pages of this newsletter via the internet, with
more than 5 million visitors each month who read about us.
On to the Flag Winners!
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
