April 21st
Steve Mc was back in town so the plan for
a "Top of the Hill" was set up for 1:15. Mike, N4HHA, was out very early
assisting in communications for the
National MS Society 2007, MS150 Bike Tour so his little Corvair
convertible wouldn't meet us there today. Linda, K4EIO, and I , K4SLB,
were in our '61 Monza, Steve, K4SKM, was in his "Grinster", the '27
Model T Hot Rod. Tony, K4AVD, & Sharon, WB4ACE, were in "Lucy" their '69
Ranchero. It looks like another week or so before their '63 Corvair
coupe will be out. We arrived at the gate just about 1:45. Ron greeted
us in his usual fashion, we then headed down the bricks following the
Ranchero. Bratt was in place for registration, Gary C was distributing
the numbers to the drivers as she wrote them down. Tony made the
turn by the clock to make his way down to block 4. Sharon opened the
North rope and crossed the street, Linda would then follow after
dropping the newsletter to Kathy and put the ropes back up. They sky
looked threatening but the weatherman said no rain, we chose to believe
him. Bill & Doris stopped by for a chat. Rich & Joe stopped to get their
newsletters as did Scotty. Graham, G4HFG, was on my shoulder so to
speak, as he is almost every week over the HAM Radio from Oldham,
England. Bill, N2WFU, Virginia, W2VEJ , Trevor & Lucky would join us
just after 3:30 in their '29 Mercedes. Bob would park his '36 Ford
Humpback down just a bit from us along with "Bo" in his all original '70
Monte Carlo.
Tony the "Timer"
mentioned to us it was time for FOOD. So, we all headed up a little
earlier than normal, Linda & I had to drop off the newsletters. Bill &
Virginia hadn't been out in several weeks so the leisurely walk to
"Flippers" allowed them to catch up a bit with friends on the way up.
Roger & Sue were out in the "Lucky 'Vette". Louie & Linda in the Nova
wagon. Dave & Arlene we in the green '57 Chevy convertible. Bob had his
GMC in the "Looney Bin" with a few other cars I really didn't recognize
between him and Larry & Cris' '64 Mercury convertible. The "Red Line
Rodders" along with the "Rat Pack" were in full force in their favorite
spots by John's "Double Nickel Express". Bob & Marge were in the '40
Buick that was on last weeks cover. Jane our regular server at "Flippers" was
there as we chose a table on the patio under the overhang. Linda had
taken Mike & Kristen's order on the phone, they were making their way
from the "Outpost" they were assigned to. While we were eating, we
spotted Neil & Elaine navigating their 2 British imports on to the brick
streets. Just then it seemed as though all of the alarm systems went
off, the ground was shaking and the windows were rattling, yup, it was
the T-Rex, all the way from the West Coast of Florida, Mark had arrived.
Our service was great, the food is always tasty. Thank You, Jane.
On the way back down we
managed to catch up with a few more of the regulars that had now made
their way to the Cruise. I stopped up for my weekly visit with Mike
Singer. After coming back down from "Old Town Radio" I spotted Jennifer
with Microphone in hand and realized, it must be the 3rd Saturday of the
Month. Another night of "On the Street" reports. That is always great to
listen to. Thanks guys for coming out. After getting back to the cars,
"Mustang Mike" was spotted chatting with "Big John" and Jennifer. Bob
arrived in his '68 Chevelle, Nick & Fran were out without the "Deuce
Coupe" seems there are complications with the repair. Rodger then
arrived with yet another of his Euro-Collection, tonight it was his '60
TR3 Triumph. I met a little guy, couldn't have been more than 6 years
old, Jack from Ohio, he and his little bother and sister were in pure
amazement with all of the old cars. With his "Mouse Ears" on his head,
he said, "this is better than Disney World!" It sure is great to hear
that from yet another up coming generation. Jim & Craig, "The
Dukes" were in place entertaining the masses. "Eddie & the
Cruzers" were on the main stage much to the delight of the "Old Town
Dancers". The rest of the night was spent as usual, visiting with the
fans of these cars and fellow cruisers. 8:00 sure came fast, next thing
I knew Nikki was handing the "Flag Winners" to Linda.
Bratt, Lee & Rich led Clint & Lynn Olson in
their '49 Ford pickup. April's "Cruiser of the Month" to block
4 right
at 8:15. Followed by the cars from the top 3 blocks to the staging area
that Block 4 becomes at this time. Mike Singer, who had been playing his
great mix of nostalgic music, assisted by Butch in the sound booth and
Jennifer on the street reporting all evening. The safety announcements
were given, Mike then played the
National Anthem. "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise". Lee led the '49 Ford from the turn at "Kids
Town", followed by the rest of the 187 Cruisers onto the bricks of "Deac
Hundley Blvd." for this the 878th running of this Central Florida
tradition to a near capacity crowd of cheering spectators.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you
to the Old Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event,
Valvoline & the A&W to name a few. Thank you to Rich, Joe, Ron,
Lee, Nikki, Bratt and the entire Cruise
Staff for keeping us all safe. Thank you to our fellow Cruisers for
making this our 230th consecutive Saturday another fun and safe day in "Town".
On to the Flag Winners!
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
