September 23rd
Imagine if you will, a small town, it could
be anywhere USA. Just a few decades ago, the 60's for me I'd like to
think it is in the upper Mid-West, that is where I grew up. Just one
block off the "Main Drag" near the band shell in the city park, usually
on a Saturday night there would be a band playing, I would meet my
friends for a night on the Town, this would include having our best girl
setting next to us, or sometimes alone in our pride and joy
as we would park along the street for block after block. The gathering
would go on for hours, the guys talking car talk, the girls, doing what
they did, I never was quite sure what that was. Cars would come and go.
Then it would be time to head for home, everyone would crank them up and
make the turn onto the "Main Drag" and make at least one loop up and
back before turning towards home, the Drive In for a late show or even
"Lover's Lane".
Apologies to Rod Serling for my opening
line, I just wanted to head into what Old Town means to me & Linda.
Tonight marked our 200th consecutive night making this journey back into
memory lane but more importantly it takes us every week to a place that
has forged relationships with people that we may never have met anywhere
else. An extremely diverse group of people from just about every walk of
life one could imagine bringing out their "Pride & Joy" to share with
the world. It is true that today's cars also have their following and
traditions that are being set for generations to come. However these
cars that are 1972 and older will never die. The owners of these
beauties that line "Trophy Row" each and every week are not owned and
driven by the over 50 crowd exclusively. Even the younger generations
have kindled a love for these same cars. That were once "Today's Cars".
There is nothing like a Hot Rod Built with a V8 on a Model T. or a
Willys with a "Big Block" a "Chopped and Channeled Lead Sled", Tail
Fins, "Flames", Dice in the windows
or even the economy cars that set the pace for today's
cars. All of the shapes sizes and colors that just make this era one to
be remembered.
Old Town and it's merchants, the sponsors of
this event, that has become a tradition itself over the last 16 years,
and it's Cruise Staff that bring order to what can be a bit chaotic,
with spectators that come from all over the world, many making return
trips annually, to see our "Pride & Joy", the cars that are the stars,
to safely see and enjoy the "Saturday Nite Cruise©". That Linda & I will
continue to keep coming back to, this is where all of our friends
congregate.
I ran out of space for a regular report. It
sure was good seeing over 250 cars on this beautiful fall evening and
all of the smiling cheering people that lined the sidewalks and
boulevards of "Deac Hundley Blvd." Old Town's "Main Drag". It was good
seeing Mike & Carol that was visiting from Tennessee, sans the Hudson
and all of the others that came out tonight.
Onto the Flag Winners.
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from NAPA and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
