October 7th
Old Towns "Vette Fest" brought nearly 300 of
the "Great American Sports Car" to the brick streets. A special Cruise
at 4:00 would take most of the post '72 cars out of "Town".
Linda & I arrived about 2:15, Tony had
driven "Lucy" out ahead of us a bit, we had to make a stop on the way
out. He gave us the report on the 'Vettes that were occupying most of
Block 4 and around the corner behind the Roller Coaster but had
considerately left spot open for us in our regular area behind "Black
Hill's Minerals". It looked like a very successful event that would
culminate with the awards and drawings at 3:45 and the parade up "Deac
Hundley Blvd" at 4:00.
After arriving Linda and I went to deliver
the newsletters to the other regulars that were, for the most part in
their "Regular Spots" the upper blocks that were near capacity. These
"Fall Days" always bring more out than the heat of Summer. There is the
threat of rain later this afternoon, a real cold front is on it's way,
could even bring some severe storms. This and the fact that there were
several other shows around this weekend, I was surprised that we had so
many cars out tonight. The spectator crowd was quite a site to see. Many
that were in "Town" for the Vette Fest stayed for the rest of the day
and into the night.
As usual the "Rat Pack" was in line up by
the rest of the "Red Line Rodders" Ralph and Shirley had their spot
staked out by the stage. Big John had out the Greenbrier again, I sure
would like to have that van. Larry & Butch were the only other ones in
the "Looney Bin" before we went to Dinner. Bill & Doris stopped and
picked up their issues for next Friday night. It was a very busy place.
We headed to "Flippers" a little early so
that we wouldn't have to try and cross as the 'Vettes rolled out of
"Town". Jane took very good care of us, as usual and as the gate opened
at 5:00 we headed back to our cars. Chris & Victoria, Tony & Sharon's
grandkids were with us as we walked back down.
The rest of the evening was spent in the
usual fashion, meeting and greeting those that wanted to know about our
cars. Talking with fellow Cruisers and just having a great day with all
of the people that come to "Town".
It took a little more effort on the part of
the "Cruise Staff" to bring order to the chaos that this many people can
cause, after all, Look at all of these cars!" and my dad had one of
those or I had one of those when I was a kid. comes to an end promptly
at 8:15 when all of the cars are "Staged" for the 16 year old spectacle
that is the "Saturday Nite Cruise©". This the 850th running started off
just like any other Saturday night with Mike Singer, the voice of Old
Town Radio, earlier spotted checking out many of the Corvettes, giving
the safety announcements and playing of the "National Anthem", the
nearly 300 additional cars that came out, made the turn around "Kid's
Town" onto the bricks of "Deac Hundley Blvd." To a near record crowd of
cheering spectators along the sidewalks and boulevards.
It's time to end this report with the many
thanks that I give each and every week to "Old Town" it's merchants, the
sponsors, the Cruise Staff for a day that they actually "Changed Out"
the show. Several hundred cars twice, managed capacity spectator
parking lots and a near record crowd all day long. Not just for the
weekly event. As well as all of those spectators that come to see our
examples of "Rolling Automotive History" and our fellow Cruisers for a
fun and safe day in "Town"
On to the flag winners.
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from NAPA and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
