October 28th
The last Cruise of October, this one will be
the 853rd running of the Tradition that is known as the "Saturday
Nite Cruise®", Trophy Row was already lined with Mercury Cougars,
the "Sun State Cougar Club" was in full force for this annual event.
Their occupation of Block 2 displaced a few of the "Regulars" but not
too bad considering that 25 of these cars were on display. The "Looney
Bin" was across the way, even Bob had the GMC by the Mercury Convertible
and the Gran Torino.
The streets did have a few rather strange
people stirring about with Halloween just a few days away the costumes
always come out a little early. The "Haunted Mansion" was doing a great
business. During the sign in process as we made our way down the bricks
we were handed our numbers by "Maleficent" the evil witch,
whom we spotted later riding in a Fairlane GT convertible during the
parade. Hmmm... wonder who that was? Even "Herbie" the Love's Bug was in
the spirit. He donned a Ghost Costume.
Later in the evening some of the "North
Florida Chevelle Club" joined in on the festivities and would lead the
parade behind the Cruiser of the Month and the Cougars. A dozen or so of
the "Florida Antique and Classic Automobile Cruisers Association" we
parked with us down in block 4 in our regular spot behind "Black Hills
Minerals". We brought out April, our '61 Corvair Monza Coupe. Steve Mc
had his Ranchero next to us. Gary & Wanda had their great '55 Chevy,
"Remember When" parked on the other side. Mustang Mike had his
Greenbrier. Dan & Liz were in the Willy's. Then the '41 Packard was
driven out by Ron. Neil & Elaine, members from the UK had their Healy
next to the steps where Don and Lenore were parked with the
Metropolitan.
Many of the cars were candy stops for many
of the Costumed spectators and "Cruiser Kids". Of course Mike Singer
blended in some of the nostalgic Halloween tunes with his regular mix over Old Town Radio.
By the time the gates closed at 8:00 there
were nearly 300 cars that were ready to make that trip up "Deac Hundley
Blvd." Then right on time, "Trophy Row" once again turned in to the
staging area for this evening. The "Cruise Staff" started to direct
the spectators to areas that would be the best viewing spots. Remember
Cruisers, we can help them out by instructing those people that are
standing in front of our cars to make their way to the Boulevard and
sidewalks of the West side of "Deac Hundley Blvd." for their safety and
enjoyment. I just tell them that they get to see all of the cars roll
past them starting at 8:30 if they get to those areas. Mike Singer gave
the safety announcements, played the National Anthem then Wolfman Jack
proclaimed "It's the Saturday Nite Cruise". The cars then made that turn
onto the bricks to an extremely large crowd of cheering spectators.
Thank you to Old Town for letting us be
their guests, to the Old Town Merchants, the Sponsors, the Cruise Staff
and our fellow Cruisers for another great day in "Town"
On to the flag winners.
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from NAPA and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
