It was about 1:45 when we made our way on to the bricks to travel
to "Our Spot" on "Trophy Row". Mr. Bill, Ron and Richard were waiting for the us
and the other Cruisers on the bench across from the Coffee Shop. Tony & Sharon
were right behind us in "Lucy", Steve Mc was wearing "Real Steel 27" his Model T
Hot Rod. The "Cruising Couples Car Club" from Eustis, Florida had several cars
on "Deac Hundley" Blvd. in front of Black Hills Minerals. They were the visiting
Club this week to lead the Parade behind the "NAPA Cruiser of the Month".
As Linda and I delivered the Newsletters we saw many cars that we
had not seen in a while, many of the "Regulars" were absent. John and Angel
where in their spot, I guess Roger musta went to Haines City. Mark, between
Cruisers, did stop by for a visit. The "Red Line Rodders" and the "Rat Pack"
were in place in block 2 next to John, Bob & Marge. I didn't see any of our
friends from the Vintage Vehicles Club nor the "Drop your Top" gang. However
there were many annual events and the First Saturday of the Month Show going on
down in Haines City. This always makes the crowd grow a little slower than
usual. Ben Franklin had his '30 Ford out in it's "Normal" spot. We were joined
by Gary & Wanda in their '55 Chevy and Jim in his GTO. At 4:00 we headed for
Flippers for some lunch. We stopped and chatted with a few others that came in,
Dave & Arlene, Newt was out as well, always good seeing him. We then finally got
to Flippers, Brandy, (did she ask for the night off?), wasn't working tonight so
the service was not as good as usual.
On our way back from eating, after the Gate opened at 5:00 Louie
& Linda came in in their "Grocery Getter". No the place was starting to fill in
a bit. Neil arrived with his '62 Healey, Elaine stayed at home to fiddle with
some Crockery. Not sure what that is but it must be what she was doing. The
spectator crowd was enormous. The "Original" Don Johnson was out for the first
time in a while, he has been going to the "Races" as of late. Dan & Liz were the
only "Regulars" in the "General Store Gang" area. I looked like a Sea of people
and they were all headed towards us in Block 4.
Mike Singer could now be heard even further, the new speakers
down behind the Roller Coaster behind "Kids Town" were working well. Mike always
plays a great mix of Music. Jim left a little early with his GTO and that made
room for Bob in is '36 Ford to join us. The rest of the night the Cruisers just
trickled in.
On time, 8:15 Mr. Bill brought the "Cruiser of the Week" into the
lanes on "Trophy Row" for the Staging of tonight's parade. The "Cruising
Couples" pulled in behind him. The National Anthem went over the speakers at
8:30 and the line with nearly 250 cars made their way onto "Deac Hundley Blvd."
for tonight's running of this weekly spectacle, "The Saturday Nite Cruise®". For
nearly 16 years, every Saturday Night, Rain or Shine, this event has taken
place. The crowd lining the streets were not disappointed, a steady stream of
"Rolling Automotive History" went past them for nearly 35 minutes. It
always seems like there is at least one of everything, I know there can't be,
but not much is missing.
Thank You, to all that come out to see this event, the merchants
of Old Town for having us, the sponsors for their participation, the "Cruisers"
that bring these cars out and of course the entire Old Town Cruise Staff for
another great day at Old Town.
