May 27th
First of all,
let's clear the air. "That won't last long" quote from
Richard referred to Mike T. Actually taking any Saturday Nights
off, even after moving to Tennessee. Both Richard and I agreed,
while talking with Mike, that we were sure that there would be a "Cruise" in his future and that
his Saturday Nights off would not last too long, It came to my
attention that people misunderstood and thought Richard was referring to a
Cruise, that at this point doesn't even exist, would not last too long. I am
sure, if Mike T. was to organize or run a Cruise anywhere else it would
last as long as he or other organizers wanted it to. I don't know how anyone would
even think otherwise, he has done it for 16 Years and his reputation
precedes him. Richard is well aware that he has a tough act to follow. Let's
not undermine him.
Now that I have wasted half of my column
trying to repair something that wasn't even broken I will get to today's
events. Linda and I arrived shortly after 2:00, there weren't very
many cruisers along "Trophy Row". Today, being the start of a Holiday
Weekend and the 40% chance of rain will take it's toll on the numbers.
Many of the cars I had not seen, A lot of out of Towner's were in spots
normally taken up by regulars. This is a great thing to see some of
them, that only come a few times a year, back on the "Row". Tony &
Sharon were to join us a little later. Steve Mc, has his family in town,
a Disney Week for them, but next week they will all come to Old Town for
the "Sweet Sixteen" cruise. Ed & Evelyn were getting rained on. Gary
joined us just before it was time to go to "Flippers". Brandy, once
again took good care of us, Thank You! Bob and Ron joined us in our spot
behind "Black Hill's Minerals" shortly after 6:00.
Lot's of car changes going on as usual, "Big
John" brought out a '64 Corvair Greenbrier that he had taken in. John &
Angel, had called me a week ago and asked me about it, in the mean time
they had bought a '72 Torino. Well to make a long story short, John &
Angel went home in a Greenbrier, "Big John" took the Torino in trade but
then Larry had to have it. "Big John" then needed to call for a Ride
home. This was just one of the "Stories" going on in Old Town. Who knows
what any of them will be driving next week? We all had to wipe down the
cars a few times, some of the Cruisers left at the first showers, I like
to call them "Free Rinses".
Next week is the "Sweet Sixteen" cruise can
you even imagine that! This day will mark the 832nd running of this
Cruise, rain or shine. The only thing that made this event stutter
were three Hurricanes in '04. George made the run after Hurricane
Charley, with his Olds, so there was Classic on the street near Cruise
Time. Linda & I have made the last 183 Saturday's. This day also marks
the leaving of our good friend and Cruisemaster, Mike T, he will turn
the SNC reins over to Richard and the FNC to Joe. Mike, you will be
missed. Please keep in touch, read the newsletters on line, see how
things are going. Linda & I will be in the line bright and early!
At Cruise time there were 176 cars that made
their way around "Kids Town" onto "The Bricks" right on time. The
spectator crowd lined the street at least 3 deep to view this spectacle
that is the "Saturday Nite Cruise©" .
Once again, Thanks to the "Cruise Staff",
the Merchants, Sponsors and the "Cruisers" for another fun and safe day
at Old Town.
