July 22nd
Once again the weatherman said it was going to
rain, 70% chance in Central Florida, I wonder what that really means, lived here
for over 25 years and still don't know. Linda and I headed out for our 191st*
consecutive "Saturday Nite Cruise©". Steve Mc was following in his '63 Ranchero.
Tony & Sharon would be coming a little later. We arrived at the gate right about
1:45 and Ron met us as usual. We then rolled down the bricks to where Mr. Bill &
Miss Lisa had the registration set up. The day was starting off slowly. The
weatherman has a tendency of scaring off Cruisers when he says 70% chance of
rain. Several spots were conned off for convertible parking, they will be
hauling VIP's tonight. After parking our cars in block 4, behind "Black Hills
Minerals", Linda and I headed off to deliver the newsletters.
While walking up "Trophy Row" we came across many
of the "Die Hards", you know the ones, could be called "Rain or Shiners" even. A
great bunch of people. The "Looney Bin" was occupied by most of it's regulars.
Bob, Larry & Cris, Butch & Stephanie. We made our way down to the "Rat Pack" and
"Redline Rodders", just a few of them were present. Bob & Marge had their
regular spot. As we looked towards the top of block 1, only Emil was a regular.
By this time, Tony called on the radio and they were on their way out to join
us.
After getting Tony & Sharon parked in the line up,
it looked like there were only going to be the 3 of us from our regular bunch
and all 3 were Ranchero's.
By 4:00 we had been joined in block 4 by just a
few other Cruisers, Bob & Marge B, in the '71 Camaro along with Chuck &
Bridgette and the Silver '57 Chevy wagon were the only "General Store Gang"
present. It was now time to head to flippers for our dinner. On the way up the
Cruiser count was still a little low. Brandy once again took good care of us as
we dined. When the gate opened at 5:00 there was a steady steam of Cruisers
making their way down the West side of "Deac Hundley Blvd." to "trophy Row". I
guess they all finally figured the weatherman was wrong. Walking back down to
our cars along the cars it was nice to see that area filling up. Kevin was out
in the "Ben Franklin Special". Bobby G. had his great '54 Chevy by the stage.
Louie and Joe Z. were parked next to the shelter housing Daryl's '64 Impala
Convertible and Dave 's Black Mustang Convertible.
After getting back to the cars Gary & Wanda rolled
in in "Remember When" their '55 Chevy. The cars then continued to come in a
steady stream. Steve, KG4JFK, came out to meet all of us and stayed to watch the
Cruise.
What a beautiful night, glad we didn't listen to
the weatherman. Always a good time at Old Town. 8:15 Mr. Bill started to lead
the "Cruiser of the Month" and the caravan of convertibles carrying the the 9 &
10 year old "Little League" Florida, Section 2 & 7 Champions in them. Then right
on time, Mike Singer announced the safety rules, played the Nation Anthem, "Wolfman
Jack" shouted out "It's Saturday Nite
Cruise©" and the cars hit the bricks on "Deac Hundley Blvd." for this the 839th
time since it's beginning some 16 plus years ago.
Thank You, Old Town, the merchants of Old Town,
the sponsors, Richard, Joe, Mr. Bill, Miss Lisa, Ron, Tommy, Gary, Lee and the
rest of the Cruise Staff that work so hard keeping this event orderly and safe
and to all of the Cruisers that come out each and every week.
