July 15th
Welcome back, Bert! What a beautiful day for a
Cruise. The Orange, "Real Steel 27" Hot Rod followed us in to Old Town, Ron was
at the gate tonight and a little further down was Mr. Bill & Miss Lisa by the
Coffee Shop registering the Cruisers as we came in. It was HOT, that is they way
I like it. Some people complain about it but I won't. Not a rain cloud in the
sky, this was the first time in weeks. Tonight should be a big Cruise.
It was just before 2:00 that Kathy dropped the
gate for us to go into block 4. of "Trophy Row", so that we could park in our
regular spot behind "Black Hills Minerals", the '61 Corvair and the Orange Hot
Rod would be the only inhabitants for a while. We were then joined by close
friends and family of Bob Foster, fellow Cruiser, that passed away less than a
week ago. Judy, his wife would be bringing out the '37 Ford "Slant Back" that
made it's maiden voyage to Louisville, Kentucky just last August after a nine
year build. I know you have all seen this "Black Beauty" with the license plate
"THE FOZ" all around Central Florida and here at Old Town. He started to Cruise
Old Town more than a decade ago with a '60 Red T-Bird Convertible.
Ed & Evelyn just got back in town from a quick
trip to Pennsylvania to pick up yet another car and Granddaughter Michelle, for
her summer visit. Tony & Sharon had family duties so "Lucy" was not seen nor did
the knitting circle have any members. Some of our other regulars must have gone
down to Plant City. Linda and I spotted Scotty's Rod, Russ' Rod parked up by the
Redline Rodders and the "Rat Pack", Bob & Marge brought out the '41 Buick and
where in their regular spot. Bob and his Green GMC were absent from the "Loony
Bin" as were Butch & Stephanie, they were out celebrating their anniversary. It
was only Cris & Larry in the Mercury Convertible that were regulars there. That
great '55 Chrysler 300 of Dave & Evelyn's was in the "Bin". Brooke their Poodle
Skirt wearing 7 year old daughter had a guest with her. "Big John" had the red
Shelby in his "Spot", he had been on vacation the past few weeks.
Just before 4:00 Bill & Doris stopped by to get
their newsletters, then Bert & "Ernie" came down to see us. She had Bert's
brother beak him out this morning. He just had to "Cruise" tonight! He had been
in the hospital or rehab center since June 3rd. He had good news that his
prosthetic would be fitted on the 28th. He is certainly eager to get back to
"Normal". Well, what ever it is that we call normal. It was sure good to see him
and the deVille out tonight! Then just as we were to go to eat, a steady flow of
Corvettes came to Block 4, more than 20 of them in all colors and years right up
to 1972.
After we all got back from "Flippers" a steady
stream of cars made their way to "Trophy Row" this continued all night, right
until the gate closed at 8:00. This would mean the mass of spectators that were
admiring the cars would have well over 200 cars to cheer on at 8:30.
Mr. Bill, with a guest, "Cruising with the
Oldies", Jennifer, led the Cruiser of the Month, followed by Bob Foster's '37
loaded with family, to the the "Staging Area", that "Trophy Row" becomes at
8:15, then right on time, after the "safety announcements", a moment of silence
for Bob Foster and the National Anthem. The "Saturday Nite Cruise©" started it's
turn past Richard to make it's way to "Deac Hundley Blvd" past all of the
eagerly waiting spectators. As we made our way on the bricks with "April" our
'61 Corvair Coupe, "Corvair Baby" started to play on "Old Town Radio", I am not
sure how Mike Singer knew we were hitting the street just at that moment. Well,
anyway I would like to think he did, Thanks! Mike. This song played until we
were past the "Clock", it really made the crowd call out to our "Air-Cooled"
Cruiser.
Once again, Linda and I had a great day with good
friends, Thank you Old Town, the Merchants of Old Town, the sponsors of the
"Saturday Nite Cruise©" , especially the
"Cruise Staff" for another safe one and Miss Lisa for getting me the "Flag
Winners" list while delivering the Checkered Flags, so that all may read before
midnight tonight on the website.
