August 5th
Linda and & drove out alone today,
most of our regulars were busy working on cars or getting ready to move
this weekend. Tony & Sharon would be joining us around 3:00. Lee met us
at the gate and had some encouraging news about his nephew John, Ron's
son. He is still in critical condition but improving slowly. Our
thoughts are with the family for a speedy recovery. Bill checked us in
as usual about midway down the bricks and added a bit of information to
the situation, Gary C was filling in for Lee that was filling in for
Ron. Sometimes you need a road map. It was hot and with the 40% chance
of rain, "Trophy Row" was a little light on Cruisers. We decided to wait
for Tony & Sharon before we would deliver the newsletters. They arrived
just shortly after 3:00. Bill & Doris stopped to check in with us. They
mentioned that Fred Marion would like to see me up at his restaurant.
We decided to herd out a little early for
dinner and deliver the newsletters on the way and use the facilities. By
this time just before 4:00 a few more of the regulars had made their way
in. Roger, Bill, John, without a car yet, and Ron were in their spot
across from Gary & Kathy and Jack & Donna. Louie & Linda were across
from Daryl and Dave & Arlene, by the way on the 9th, Dave and Arlene
celebrate their 50th Anniversary! Congratulations! The "Looney Bin" had
a few of it's regulars, Bob, Larry & Cris and Butch with the Gran
Torino, I didn't see Stephanie but I am sure she had to be there,
somewhere. The "Red Line Rodders" and The "Rat Pack" were out in force
down by John in the "Double Nickel". Bob & Marge had the '41 Buick out.
Emil was near the top of Block 1 with his "Fat Fendered Ford".
After a leisurely meal at "Flippers",
Bandy was off
celebrating her birthday, Tony,
Sharon and Linda made their way back to the cars and I went to see Fred.
He has really gotten into supporting the Cruise's and the Cruisers the
last few weeks, Jim & Craig, the "Dukes"
are now performing Saturday Nite's on the Front Patio from 7:00 to
11:00. The fans have followed them up from the corner by the A&W and of
course being right at the gate they have attracted many new ones. Fred
sets up a nice selection of food for the audience to partake in. So,
welcome to the pages of this newsletter as the newest advertiser, all of
the readers will appreciate that.
On the way back down to the cars, about 15
minutes behind the others, the Gate reopened, George & Mary rolled their
Monte on to the bricks as I passed by. Then I ran into Ralph & Shirley,
Bert & "Ernie" always good to see them out. Now "Trophy Row" was
starting to fill up a bit. Reports of rain all around Old Town but none
had fallen here. Mark was visiting with Ron, I reminded him to stop by
for his back issues. Roger & Larry rolled into Block 4 just after I
arrived back at the cars.
The cars continued to come in in a steady
stream the rest of the night. I spotted some one who looked to be Santa
in a '46 Packard followed by a '48 Frazer and a '29 Chrysler Royale
Coupe. A few cars that I have not seen in a while. 7:30 Linda and I went
back up to listen to the "Dukes"
for few a numbers, then spotted even more regulars on the way back down.
Then just before 8:00 Jerry &
Teresa debuted their Mopar, straight from Scotty's rod shop. It's about
time! Great Looking and sounded just as fine.
Just after Miss Lisa gave the flag winners
list to me, right on time, Mr. Bill led the "Cruiser of the
Month", Bob Juarbe, "Red Line Rodder", "Rat Packer" and "Mustang Mike's"
Saint Cloud, Thursday Nite Cruiser" in his Black '69 Nova, onto "Trophy
Row" that becomes the staging area at 8:15. After Mike Singer gave the
safety announcements and then played the National Anthem, Richard and
the staff directed the nearly 200 cars onto "Deac Hundley Blvd" to a
cheering crowd of spectators for this the 841st running of the tradition
that is the "Saturday Nite Cruise©".
Thank you, Old Town, the merchants of Old
Town, the sponsors, the entire Cruise Staff and the "Cruisers" for
another safe and fun day at Old Town.
Onto tonight's "Flag Winners"
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from NAPA and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
