"A 15 year plus tradition continues!"
The weatherman promised that it would be a
dry day. Well I guess he forget to tell the clouds that were all around
us! Or was it that Mike T. arranged for us to all have a bit of a rinse
off to get rid of the Love Bugs?
It was the first Cruise that we took out the "61 Corvair
(we have decided to call her April) to at Old Town. She used to
Cruise with her former owner a few years ago so we figured she should
know the drill. Steve McCullough stopped by our house about 1:45 in
"Blanche" his '29 Ford Model A. In the car with him was his daughter,
Carrie and in the rumble seat was Aly his granddaughter. Seems as though
they ran through a little rain on the way and she had got soaked, well
she got dried out before we arrived at Old Town. Seems like Aly likes
the rain anyway. Last year when they were in town visiting she rode in
the back of our Ranchero during the Cruise in the rain. Steve's wife,
Cheryl, we'll see her out bit more now that the weather is cooling,
brought out daughter Amy and granddaughter Riley to join in on a meal at
Flippers Pizza.
We met up with Trevor "the Cruising Dog" on the frontage road on the way
into Old Town. He brought out the '29 Mercedes. OK so Bill had to drive
it for him. This was to be Virginia's first time with this bunch.
Mustang Mike, Mike and Carol Weiss, Ed and Evelyn joined us behind Black
Hills Minerals. The "General Store Gang" was down a bit tonight
but Bob and Marge had the Camaro out. Ron Simmons brought out his
Packard and Rose brought out the '37 Ford convertible.
Linda and I made several walks up and down "Trophy Row" visiting with
all of the Cruisers. The "Drop Your Top Gang" was in place. The "Red
Line Rodders" were present in great numbers. It was a great night as the
little bit of rain that we had was done by 6:00 or so. John B. brought
out his girlfriend, wait, that was his wife? Just kidding, good to see
you out Mary, I am sure we will see you more often that it is now
starting to cool off.
I would like to mention everyone that we manage to talk with each week
but then I would spend all night writing this report. Gary Collins was
back with us tonight, he was battling a bit of, well it seemed like
everything, last week. Good to see you back.
Tonight was a near record crowd of spectators. Bob and Barbra from
Scotland stopped out to see us. They have been regular spectators to
this and the Thursday Nite Cruise-In for many years when they are on
vacation. They own a '57 Chevy over there and are great fans of the
sport. Bob promised me an article or two to share with our readers.
Looking forward to hearing from them.
"Topaz" rocked the main stage starting at 7:00, Mike Singer could be
heard on Old Town Radio through out the streets and 219 cars rounded the
corner by "Kids Town" on to "Deac Hundley Blvd." at 8:30 to a cheering
crowd.
Thanks again to Mike T., Joe R., Mr. Bill, Lisa and the rest of
the staff for a safe and orderly event. This is part of what makes this
the international spectacle that is "The Saturday Nite Cruise"
