Rain - Rain - Rain, who would have thought that 8:30 in the morning when
I got to the 15th Anniversary "Saturday Nite Cruise"®
that I would have been the 129th car to be IN LINE on such a rainy day
with the promises of even more rain all day long. Some of the "Cruisers"
had been in line since Thursday morning!. Well with all of this in
consideration there was concern that the 800 cars that were expected
would not even be close. This rain just would not go away, then it did,
then it was back yet the cars kept on coming.
The long line of cars took less than 20 minutes to be registered and
parked on "Trophy Row", all of the former "Cruisers of the Month" were
directed to special parking spots right on "Deac Hundley Blvd.". The
"Cruise Staff" did a great job getting everyone settled in. Louie Zibrin
was in charge of getting the "Cruisers of the Month" situated.
Mike T. directed our "60 Ranchero into a great spot right in front of
the "Cruise Office" so Miss Lisa could keep an eye on us. This allowed
us a great view of all the rest of the "Cruisers" as they rolled in.
Next to us was Tony & Sharon's '69 Ranchero, this great car had a
factory 390 in it, what a nice ride. Thank You Mike T.
Marilyn Monroe started to wander around the crowd for "Photo Ops",
"Rick Trickster and the 15th Street Band" started to set up
early in the afternoon. About 4:00 Craig and Jim set up and started to
sign their variety of "Doo Wop" right by the A&W. Old town Radio was
rocking the crowd all day long.
Tonight's drawings were to include 3 great, grand prizes including a
Note Book computer. Old Town merchants had special Discounts for today
like the A&W had .99 Root Beer Floats, Cheeseburgers and other delights
for Cruisers all day long.
It was a fantastic anniversary celebration, we really didn't mind wiping
the cars down several times. The rain did not even seem to keep many
spectators away.
Starting on time, right at 8:30 nearly 500 cars made the turn by kids
town onto the brick streets, the crowd of spectators were at least 3
deep on both sides of the brick street. Even then the rain did not seem
to dampen the sprits of any one in Old Town. A sea of umbrellas were in
front of the stage for the closing ceremony right after the cruise. I
did not get any of the grand prize winners names tonight, I will try and
post them next week.
Once again we have to commend Mike T and the entire staff and Merchants
for making this 15th Anniversary Cruise even more special than the last
and a special Thank You to all of my fellow Cruisers for coming out on
such a wet day.
So does it really rain at Old Town? It might but it never seems to stop
these great cars from "Cruising".
Now onto the flag winners, tonight there were twice as many as
normal.....
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town Checkered Flag"
along with $25 cash, a case of Valvoline 20W50 Racing Oil and a drink from
the Tropical Breeze The $50 Cruise-O-Matic was not won so next week it is
up to $50.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
